SALLY MARTIN S.E.A.

Sally Martin is widely considered as one of the finest contemporary equestrian painters in the country; she exhibits nationally and internationally and has won numerous awards. She has had work juried into the Salon de Saumur, The American Academy of Equine Art and is a full member of the UK’s Society of Equestrian Artists. She has twice been awarded the Society’s prestigious Cuneo Medal for the most meritorious group of work at the annual summer exhibition.

Sally says: Ideas for my paintings are formed through a combination of memory, observation, imagination and photographic reference gathered at equestrian events at home and abroad.  With an idea but no fixed outcome in mind I start each work with only a most basic drawing indicating the major compositional shapes.  Working quickly, laying in large areas of colour and tone, I fill the canvas or paper letting each brushstroke and mark spark ideas for the next colour, brushstroke, line or blending technique. Typically, I will start a number of paintings at the same time and works evolve through stages with pauses in between sessions to maintain my freshness for each piece. Through all phases of painting I endeavor to not over-explain or get caught up in detail, preferring instead to invite the viewer’s eye to explore my ideas and bring their own unique memory, experience and emotion to complete the artwork.
