A painter, sculptor, designer and teacher, Brian Yale was born in Staffordshire in 1936. After playing in an orchestra during National Service, Yale rejected a musical career in favour of art. He attended Stourbridge College of Art from 1952 to 1956, then the Royal College of Art from 1958 to 1962, where he gained a prize and postgraduate scholarship. He lectured at Hornsey College of Art from 1962 to 1968 before becoming an artist/environmental designer in the Greater London Council architect’s department from 1968 to 1986. In 1986 he was a visiting lecturer at Clemson University, South Carolina and he lectured part-time at Sir John Cass College in 1987. Eventually, in 1988, Brian Yale became a full-time artist. Since then he has been commissioned by the Greater London Council to paint the Thames Barrier, to mark its official opening (1984) and to produce a major sculpture for the Docklands Development Corporation (1988). He has also taken part in many solo and mixed exhibitions and his work is in many public collections, including the Tate Gallery.
