Marcelle Milo Gray: Green & Gold

My work is inspired by medieval art and I employ the same traditional techniques. I prepare my own gesso panels which is a very satisfying job. I underpaint the composition in egg tempera and gild with gold or  copper leaf. I usually complete the paintings in oils, preferring this to the rather dry, chalky finish of the egg tempera on it's own.  My subject matter is the natural world surrounding my village in Devon. I want my compositions, my materials and methods to isolate and elevate the subject matter. So, a sheep or the ubiquitous grey squirrel and pigeon, surrounded by 24carat gold leaf can be seen for the lovely creatures they are
