John Noott Galleries

The Art of World War II: A Personal Collection

Currently showing at the Broadway Museum & Art Gallery https://broadwaymuseum.org.uk/

The urge to record is strong in artists, never more so than in times of trouble.  Art dealer John Noott was a boy of seven in 1939 and clearly remembers the day war was declared, the real fear of invasion, the Blitz, rationing and loss.

For many years he has sought paintings and other art works which, created at the time, reflect his memories in a unique way.  They are presented in this special exhibition featuring over 70 paintings, drawings and prints.

The war is frequently featured on televiosion, in plays and in talks, but the immediacy of these art works gives a real feel of the times as they happened.  Whether created by celebrated or by little known artists, these rarely seen works provide a unique and powerful vision of the war's impact on the lives of ordinary people.
