Ricahrd Barrett was born in Cardiff in 1963. He now lives and works in Yorkshire, where he is inspired by both the land and the sea.
"My work is driven by the elements, the changing dynamics of weather, light and how they breathe life into the landscape".
Richard Barrett's work usuallly begins with a series of sketches, providing an anchor or a starting point. As the process of painting begins, Richard starts to employ a more intuitive approach. Instinct and memories then guide the direction of the work, with paint layers energetically applied nusing brushes, palette knives and rags. Texture is very important to Richard - scratching, mark making and glazing are often incorporated into his finished work.
The seascapes and landscapes that emerge have a suggested abstracted quality.
The viewer is invited into the painting to find their own interpretastion and story.
