E. R. Sturgeon

E R Sturgeon was born in 1920 in Somerset.  His love and talent for art developed during his school years.  When, at fourteen, Sturgeon left school amidst a depression any thoughts of a career in arts were quickly dismissed.

In 1940, Sturgeon enlisted with the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. In 1942 he was posted to North Africa where during the notorious battle for Tobruk he was captured and transported to Italy. The continuation of war brought a movement of prisoners and Sturgeon like most was moved to Germany where again his interest in art was aroused. Sturgeon tried to relieve the boredom by sketching portraits of his fellow prisoners.

At the end of the war, Sturgeon studied at Taunton Art College, which led him into a career as commercial artist. After several years however, Sturgeon began to devote more of his time to painting watercolours.    In 1970, Sturgeon held his first one-man exhibition in a Langport gallery. The exhibition was a great success Sturgeon sold every painting and secured a contract with a London publishing company to publish limited edition prints of his work.    Demand for his work then grew rapidly.

After a short illness Dick Sturgeon died on the 5th December 1999.    He was still working until two or three day before his death.

Dick Sturgeon was a very popular and gifted artist.  He is particularly well known for his rural village scenes, but the range of work is much wider than that.  His work is held in the highest esteem and is exhibited in galleries throughout the world.
