A painter of sporting subjects, Frank Agernon Stewart was born on 16th October 1877 and was educated in Hastings. He studied art at Rochester under George Ward, then at the Slade School under Fred Brown, and also at Calderon’s Animal School. Frank Agernon Stewart was appointed war artist to The Illustrated London News and in October 1899 went to South Africa where he was present at several batles including Colenso, Spion Kop. Monti Christo and the relief of Ladysmith. Invalided home, in 1901 he went to Paris where he studied at the Académie Julien. He illustrated The Relief of Ladysmith by J B Atkins. Principal paintings include Old Surrey and Burstow Hunt and The Braes of Derwent Hunt. Frank Algernon Stewart died on 30th March 1945. |
