He won several prizes and scholarships during his studies, and many after. As well as showing widely in mixed shows in London and the provinces, Tom Coates was for a time President of the RBA and a member of the RWS, NEAC, RP and PS, of which he was president.  Tom Coates carried out a number of prestigious commissions, including one for the RWS in 1990 to paint the ceremonial procession celebrating the Queen Mother’s 90th birthday.
