| A London painter of dogs, especially terriers chasing birds, cats or mice, George Armfield also painted landscapes, dead game birds and other wild animals. His small dog pictures often passed off as the work of Landseer. He exhibited 5 works at the Royal Academy, between 1836 and 1839, under the name of George Armfield Smith before dropping the name 'Smith' to become simply 'George Armfield', and it is under this name he is better known. He continued to exhibit at the Royal Academy until 1862, as well as at the British Institution and the Suffolk Street Galleries of the Royal Society of British Artists. |
