He was born at Clifton on 9 November 1878. He studied art under A S Cope at South Kensington, at Heatherleys and also with Frank Calderton. He worked for a number of journals including the Graphic and Punch. In 1912 Edwards travelled to Tangier and Gibraltar, and during the First World War he served with the Army Remount Service. Lionel Edwards exhibited at the R.Cam.A., where he became a member in 1926, and at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours , becoming a member in 1927. He also exhibited at a number of the other London Galleries including the Royal Academy in 1931, and was a member of the London Sketch Club. Best known as a painter in watercolours, Lionel Edwards was influenced by Gilbert Holiday and admired G D Armour. Edwards combined his knowledge of horses and hunting with atmospheric landscape painting. His work is represented in many private collections and he illustrated numerous books including My Hunting Sketch Book (two volumes, London, 1928 and 1930). He lived at West Tytherley, Wiltshire for many years and died on 13 April 1966.
