| Joan Jefferson Farjeon was born in London, the daughter of novelist and playwright Joseph Jefferson Farjeon and niece of children's writer Eleanor Farjeon. She studied at Westminster School of Art from 1931 to 1933. A professional stage designer and scene painter for over 50 years, she was responsible for the sets and costumes of the plays by her close friend Nicholas Stuart Gray between 1949 and 1970. She also illustrated many of his books and plays for children. She worked mainly in pen and ink apart from her book cover and theatre designs which were in several colours. Her illustrations are finely shaaded and very decorative, with elements of the whimsical and picturesque. |
