The following work by Gideon Yates has been previously exhibited by John Noott Galleries and is now in private collections world wide.
A topographical artist, Gideon Yates had been a maritime insurance broker in Lancaster until 1803 when, after financial problems, he was imprisoned for debt in Lancaster Castle. It is thought that he may have taken up painting during the months that he spent there, but evidence suggests that Yates had been painting at least by 1802. By 1811 Gideon Yates had become a professional artist, and he painted Lancaster extensively. The last dated pictures of Lancaster are from 1817, and around 1820 he moved to London. It is thought that in around 36 years, Gideon Yates painted three to four hundred pictures of the area, and possibly many more.
