Contemporary British painter Terry Watts RBA displays an unsentimental approach to the English landscape. The majestic open spaces and vast skies allow the physical forces behind the landscape to be clearly seen in his precisely rendered paintings of unusually wide perspective. Terry turned to painting having first pursued his interest in landscape through photography, and the result encompasses more of the character of the landscape than the camera can reveal.
Terry Watts left Camberwell College of Art in 1962, continuing his training at Hammersmith College of Art. He worked in education, obtaining a science degree along the way, before moving to work on large landscape-based sculptural projects for London Docklands Development Corporation, Merton Borough Council and British Gas, among others. These commissions gave Terry a new fascination with perception of landscape and he returned to painting full time.
Terry’s first solo exhibition was at Stark Gallery in London, and he has exhibited widely in southern England, including Beaux Arts Bath and here in Broadway, and at the Mall Galleries, Bloxham Galleries and Blackheath Gallery in London. His work is represented in collections in Paris, the Netherlands and Washington State as well as local authorities in England.
Terry Watts was elected to the RBA in 2006. His work is regularly shown at the Sunday Times Watercolour Competition and at The Discerning Eye. He was awarded the Guest Prize at the Laing Landscape Competition, and has twice won first prize at the London City Airport Competition. In 2007 Terry received the Buzzacott ‘Best Picture’ Award at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours. |
