Malcolm Sutcliffe was born in 1954 and is married with two children.
He studied ceramics at Birmingham Polytechnic in 1976 and was so drawn to the glass facility there that he changed direction to study glass full time.
Malcolm was later employed as a visiting lecturer at Bristol Polytechnic and Stourbridge College of Art and Technology.
At this time he also set up his first studio.
After spending a few years working at a glass studio in Cambridge he moved to Derbyshire where he set up a glass studio with two other glassblowers.
Since 1991 Malcolm has been making his own very distinctive hand blown glass with the help of his wife Jean.
All the glass is free blown using recycled 24% lead crystal.
No moulds are used to shape the glass, only wet newspaper, wooden blocks and the traditional glassmakers tools.
Malcolm enjoys making bowls, vases, dishes and plates that have clean, smooth, simple shapes.
For some time now he has been exploring the watery theme of the sea with dolphins and whales as the subjects and he has recently introduced polar bears from the Arctic and African elephants in the sunset.
Malcolm’s works are sold widely throughout the United Kingdom, Europe, the United States of America, Japan and many other countries, as well as being held in many collections at galleries and museums.
