British studio potter Peter Sparrey lives and works in Normandie, France. He produces finely thrown studio pottery from a stoneware clay body dug locally in St Amand, and a fine porcelain body manufactured by Valentine Clays Ltd, Stoke-on-Trent, England.
In the last few years Sparrey has shown his work extensively in leading London and provincial galleries, and it appears in private and public collections in America, Japan and throughout Europe. His pots are regularly shown alongside the likes of Bernard Leach, Lucie Rie and Michael Cardew, founders of the 20th century ceramics movement.
Peter Sparrey achieves rich colour development in the glazes using a variety of techniques. They include deeply intense iron-bearing tenmoku, vibrant 'sang de boeuf' copper reds and cool celadon, ash and chun glazes. Most pieces are reduction fired to 1300º centigrade in a gas kiln.
