Val Pitchford has worked in design all her adult life, gradually moving over to full-time painting. As Matisse observed, “All artists bear the imprint of their time,”and the work of many of the great innovative twentieth century painters is a constant source of inspiration and learning for Val.
Her abstract work has an inclination towards landscape, aiming to capture the moment, or embody a concept with a sense of freshness and immediacy. The glory of paint, the brush-stroke and colour as a means of liberation go together to form the whole. The viewer is encouraged to partake and enjoy the exploration on the canvas.
Val Pitchford’s most valuable and extensive study has been at the Lydgate Art Research Centre. As well as in this country, her work is held in collections in America and on the Continent. It is shown in many galleries, including a recent exhibition in Cork Street, London.
