| A painter of architecture, landscapes and abstracts; designer of stained glass, windows for the theatre, John Piper was born on 13th December 1903 at Epsom, Surrey. He studied at the Richmond and Kingston Schools of Art and at the RCA, 1928-29 and was made a member of the London Group in 1933 and the 7 and 5 Society 1934-35. At this time he painted abstract compositions but by 1938 he had returned to representational painting especially architectural subjects. John Piper's first one-man show was held in 1938 at the London Gallery. He was an official war artist between 1940 and 1942. He exhibited internationally and is represented in many public collections, and written and illustrated a number of books. John Piper lived in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire. |
