A London painter of battles, Norie was a member of an Edinburgh family of painters and decorators, and the great great grandson of James Norie. He was a prolific painter of military subjects and kept a studio at Aldershot from about 1870 in order to study his material at first hand. He exhibited between 1876 and 1889 at the Royal Academy, New Watercolour Society and elsewhere. Titles at the Royal Academy include Battle of Ulundi (1882) and Tel-e-Kebeer (1884). He also did many watercolour studies of military uniforms.
