Born in India in 1964, Kanwaldeep S. Kang, ‘Nicks’ to his family and friends, came, as a baby, to settle dered any career but painting. After studying History of Art at Leicester University, and eschewing formal training, he made his first steps along what can be a very rough road. As a child he had always admired a print of a portrait of the Queen which his father proudly displayed in the family home, and on a whim, he decided to seek out the artist, John Townsend, who, luckily was living not too far distant. Early overtures by letter were ignored, but persistence paying, a telephone call finally secured an invitation from the artist to visit him. Nicks and Townsend got on well, and settled down to weekly visits for instruction and advice. This, and his fascination with the work of Augustus John, Boldini and, more than any other, the Austrian artist Gustav Klimt, resulted in the distinctive images of the female form for which he is now known.
