William John Philpin Jones (Jon)
1913-1992
Jones had worked as a cartoonist for The Cardiff Western Mail before joining up in 1939. He served with the Welch Regiment in North Africa and was an Assistant Military Landing Officer at Salerno and Anzio. He was evacuated from Italy with shell shock and while recuperating began drawing bizarrely-dressed 8th Army officers. After sending examples to the British Army Newspaper Unit they began appearing in Eighth Army News, the characters becoming known as 'The Two Types'. Jones ended up a full-time cartoonist for the British Army Newspaper Unit and his work proved popular with the rank and file although less so with the Generals who tried to have his cartoons banned. Jones drew around 300 Two Types cartoons between 1943 and 1946. After the war he worked as a cartoonist for The Sunday Pictorial, The News Chronicle and The Daily Mail.
