After initially working in several different fields, including the music industry, cable TV and the restaurant trade, Emma Johnstone returned to college at the age of 26 to study ceramics at Harrow College, University of Westminster, where she attained a BA First Class Honours degree in 1996. In 1999, after three years of working part-time alongside developing her ceramics, she established her own studio where she does what she likes best – working with clay.
Emma Johnstone makes one-off ceramic pieces – hollow, thrown bowl forms in various sizes, which are raku fired. The small bowl area in the centre of the form is then gilded with copper, silver of gold leaf. She also teaches ceramics at Richmond Adult Education College and runs projects at primary school level.
Emma Johnstone has been exhibiting her work since 1996 throughout the UK. She is a regular exhibitor at the Business Design Centre, Islington, Chelsea Craft Fair, London and Glasgow Art Fair. Her work has also appeared in a number of publications including Homes and Gardens, Live it – Conran Magazine and The Mail on Sunday Magazine. She is a professional member of the Craft Potters Association of Great Britain. |
