Susan Hayward lives and works in Wales. Born in rural Warwickshire to parents passionate for the countryside and wildlife, she grew up with a natural artistic empathy for these influences, which included showing horses in hand, under saddle and racing.
Susan Hayward has an imaginative approach to ceramic work, yet uses no tools to form the sympathetic lines of her studies, instead drawing on her own detailed knowledge of equine confirmation. To these ends the organic matter in paper clay affords a robust material with intense flexibility for the creative process.
Susan Hayward's work reflects a lifelong interest in equines and the role that they have played alongside us throughout history. Horses have an intrinsic and diverse place in our evolution. They have provided food and transport; supported our agricultural development; elevated their owner on the battlefields of both sport and war with discernable loyalty - and we have celebrated this partnership for centuries through art.
