Claude Harrison studied at Preston School of Art 1939 – 41, Liverpool School of Art 1941 – 42, and the RCA 1947 – 50. He became a painter of portraits, conversation pieces and imaginative figure subjects in oils and tempera, mostly on a small scale in great detail. Claude Harrison exhibited regularly at the RA, the RP and in group exhibitions, and has held solo exhibitions in Europe and the USA. His work is represented in public and private collections. In the 1950s Harrison turned to tempera and his imaginative figure paintings represented contemporary and allegorical subjects, particularly clowns, pierrots and maskers against bleak and deserted backgrounds. Harrison had numerous solo shows including Contemporary Fine Art Gallery, Eton, 1992. He and his wife, Audrey Johnson the artist, shared a show in 1991 at the Phoenix Gallery, Highgate. Their son is the potter Tobias Harrison and they live in Cumbria. Claude Harrison published The Portrait Painters’ Handbook, 1968, and The Book of Tobit, 1969.
