Born in Glamorgan in 1947, Gregory Davies studied at the Sutton School of Art and under Sir John Cass in London.
He has held over 23 one-man shows, with major exhibitions held in Devon, London, Sheffield and Canada.
Gregory's work is seen regularly at John Noott Galleries where he is one of the most popular of the 'gallery artists' and his work now features in many private collections.
Gregory's early paintings were largely abstract works, with strong overtones of political commitment and protest, but in recent years his interest has changed completely and his new works reflect his preoccupation with capturing the light in a landscape and the atmospheric essence of a place or moment in time.
Having lived in Devon for many years with his wife, the painter Janet Davies, they moved to France in the spring of 1990.
Surrounded by beautiful rural scenery in Devon, it was natural that Gregory Davies should paint the landscape, favouring the more subtle and quieter aspects of life - a walk through a sunlit lane, the reflections in the still water of the Tiverton Canal, cattle grazing peacefully in local pastures and a gently meandering river bank seen on a hot summer's day - and the move to France has not changed this emphasis.
Tuscany is a regular haunt, and Gregory is habitually drawn back each year to paint, using his oils and pastels to capture the intense Mediterranean light and the vibrancy of colour and life to be found in that country.
