Charles Cundall

| Charles Cundall studied at Manchester School of Art, the Royal College of Art from 1912 to1914 and 1918, the Slade from 1919 – 1920 and in Paris. He specialised in landscape, townscape and portrait painting in oils and watercolours. He also designed lusterware for Pilkington’s pottery and stained glass. Cundall served with the Royal Fusiliers during the Second War and travelled extensively to Italy, Sweden, France, Russia, Spain , USA and Canada. Cundall exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1918 and was elected Associate Member in 1937 and Member in 1944. His first one man show was held at Colnaghi’s in 1927. He was elected to the NEAC in 1924, RP in in 1933, ARWS in 1935 and RWS in 1941, and was an official war artist from 1940 – 1945. Charles Cundall was particularly skilled in portraying crowd scenes he observed ordinary people in every day settings painting in low and warm tones. Queen Mary bought his painting Coronation Day 1937 which she later gave to George VI. |
