A painter of genre, portraits, biblical subjects, landscapes and angling scenes, and also an etcher and engraver, Alfred Walter Bayes was born in the village of Lumbutts, Langfield, Yorks in 1832. He was married to Emily Fielden (born Todmorden, Lancs, c.1838) and was the father of Emmeline (born St. Pancras, London, c.1868) and of Walter, Gilbert and Jessie, who were also artists. He attended Heatherleys Art School, paying his way doing illustrations notably for the Dalziel brothers to engrave. Alfred Walter Bayes produced 290 drawings for the Complete Illustrated Stories of Hans Christian Anderson. He exhibited in the Royal Academy (1858-1908) and the British Institution (1859-1867). An example of his work is 'Daydreams', (see right), which can be seen in York Art Gallery.
