David Bates

| A Midlands landscape painter, David Bates was a native of Worcester and initially employed as an illustrator at the Royal Worcester Porcelain Works before setting up on his own as a landscape artist. His style and subjects were similar to other members of the Birmingham School, such as Joseph Thors and S H Baker. Scenes from his native Worcestershire, Wales and other places of great scenic beauty were among his most popular subjects, but Bates also made many small sketches of hedges and plants, which he usually inscribed and signed on the reverse. David Bates exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1872, and also at Suffolk Street and the Grosvenor Gallery. |
