One of the country’s most distinguished landscape artists, Jeremy Barlow has exhibited widely both in this country and in Europe. His passion for brilliant sunlight is demonstrated by his atmospheric and evocative subject matter so typical of Mediterranean countries. Barlow travels not only to large cities such as Paris, Lyon, Barcelona, Granada, Venice, Florence, Rome and Naples; but often to small provincial villages and towns off the beaten track. His fascination for local life takes him as far south as Morocco to paint the biblical simplicity and rugged charm of the souks in Fez, Marrakech and Essaouira and in contrast, back to the chic sophistication of Monte Carlo, Cannes, St Tropez and Paris. Rich shadows and bright pools of sunlight are used to great effect not only compositionally but also to create a sense of mystery.
In the spring and summer of 2005 Jeremy Barlow embarked upon an ambitious itinerary to paint his beloved Provence where he travelled to Aix en Provence, St Remy de Provence, Lacoste, Cotignac and many other medieval towns and villages, seeking out intimate studies of native life as well as recording the local landscape. In September and October 2005 he covered 6000 miles driving through Italy down to Sicily, painting Sienna, Rome and Naples on the way.
His work has been exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute of Watercolour Painters, the Royal Society of Marine Artists and the Royal Society of British Artists. He is a long-standing member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (ROI) and served as a council member from 1995 to 1999. He has won a number of major awards over the years for his work including the Stanley Grimm Prize in 1994 and 2000 and the Alan Gourlay Memorial Prize in 1999 at the annual ROI Exhibitions at the Mall Galleries in London. Many of his works hang in public, private and corporate collections worldwide and he has held immensely successful exhibitions at major galleries in England and northern Europe.
Jeremy Barlow returned to England after spending eight years in Dusseldorf, Germany, and now lives in a 17th century farmhouse on the East Anglican coast, under the ‘big skies of Norfolk’. |
