Painter Paul Banning RI RSMA AROI was born in Trinidad in 1934 and educated at Clifton College, Bristol and the West of England College of Art, where he gained NDD Honours in furniture design. After national service he became a furniture designer in industry, but redundancy in 1986 gave him the opportunity to start a new career in painting. Using his design skills and basic Art School training in drawing (taught by Victor Passmore RA), he studied the great watercolour masters of the 18th and 19th centuries, and learned the masterly skills of watercolour painting.
Paul Banning is mainly a plein air painter and loves the challenge of painting direct from the subject whenever possible; he travels extensively and is constantly looking for interesting subject matter. He started teaching watercolours in 1986 and has gained a high reputation for his skill and patience in teaching amateur painters. He has run many painting holidays in Europe and the UK and writes regularly for a number of art journals.
Paul Banning has exhibited in solo and group shows in France, Holland, Italy, USA, Dubai and in many UK galleries. He has also exhibited in the RA, RI, C21, ROI, RSMA, NEAC, the Singer and Friedlander watercolour competition (2003, 2006, 2007) and the Lynn Painters Stainers Competition 2007.
