A painter, etcher, aquatint engraver and lithograher of sporting subjects, Henry Thomas Alken was born in London, the son and pupil of Samuel Alken, and studied under the miniaturist J T Barker Beaumont. In 1810 Alken and his wife went to live in Melton Mowbray. He exhibited only two paintings at the Royal Academy, both miniatures. The first engravings after his paintings were published in 1813, and the first prints by him in 1815. There followed a vast output of prints by or after him right through to the 1820s and 1830s. Henry Alken later settled in London where he died in 1851.
