Status: Sold. Title: A Skye Terrier
Born at Dolgaren, Ayrshire, Alexander was apprenticed to a Kilmarnock house painter who also painted landscapes, and he later held a position in the workshop of the Royal Scottish Museum in Edinburgh. From about 1868 he devoted himself to animal painting, mostly horses and dogs. He was considered by several eminent artists to be the finest painter of horse portraits of his time. He sometimes signed with a monogram. He was a strong influence of G D Armour and took him on his first trip to Tangier. In 1906 he visited Paris and his work tends to reflect the freedom of the impressionists. Amongst his bloodstock patrons was the Duke of Portland. He was the father of the painter Edward Alexander, and the father-in-law of Alexander Roche RA. He lived in Edinburgh for many years and exhibited at most of the major exhibitions, but mainly at the Royal Scottish Academy. He became ARSW in 1878, RSA in 1888, RSW in 1889 and resigned in 1907.
